Sworn translation: definition and legal value

In France, a sworn translation has the official, legal standing that many procedures require. Unlike a standard translation, it can only be produced by an expert translator approved by a French court of appeal.

The oath

Having taken an oath before a court of appeal, the sworn translator is authorised to certify that the translation is a faithful and accurate rendering of the original document.

The seal

Their seal, their signature and the statement “certified true translation of the original” give the translation recognised legal value.

Our stamps, and the magnifying glass we use to read documents that are hard to decipher: every translation is checked before certification.

Mark W.Google review · July 2026

Je recherchais un service professionnel pour effectuer la traduction d’un acte civil, et AFTraduction a répondu exactement à mes attentes. Le service s’est montré fiable, disponible et attentif à chaque étape du processus.
La prise en charge a été efficace, avec un rendu de traduction nickel et certifié pour la modique somme de 35 euros , et la possibilité de déposer puis récupérer les documents sur place sans avoir à envoyer quoi que ce soit sur le web
Vraiment, un service serieux et fiable , que je recommande sans hésitation.

Value and validity

What is a sworn translation?

A sworn translation is an official translation made by an expert translator sworn before a French court of appeal. The translator signs it, stamps it and certifies that it is faithful to the original document. AFTraduction provides sworn translations in 75 languages.

Will my translation be accepted by the authorities?

Yes, in France. Our sworn translations are recognised by French authorities: prefectures, OFII, ANTS, town halls and courts. Abroad, an apostille or legalisation may be required; check with the body that will receive your file.

Do I need an apostille with a sworn translation?

It depends on the destination country. For countries that have signed the Hague Convention, an apostille is usually required on the original document; some foreign authorities also ask for the sworn translation itself to be apostilled: we tell you what to do for your country. For other countries, consular legalisation may be needed.

How long is a sworn translation valid?

A sworn translation has no expiry date as such. Some authorities do, however, require a recent original document (less than 3 or 6 months old, depending on the case). The translation remains valid for as long as the source document is.

How is it different from a certified translation?

A sworn translation is signed by an expert translator sworn before a French court of appeal: it has official value. An agency-certified translation carries the agency’s stamp and the signature of a specialised professional translator, who is not sworn. Semi-official, it suits internal or unofficial uses.

Prices and turnaround

How much does a sworn translation cost?

From €35 incl. VAT per page, for a standard document of up to 250 words (birth certificate, driving licence…) in English or Arabic. The other languages available online cost €42 to €58 incl. VAT per page, at the same price into and out of French. Anything else is quoted on request.

How long does it take?

With the standard option, allow up to 5 business days depending on volume. With the express option, the translation is delivered within 48 hours maximum, or even the same day depending on the language.

Ordering and delivery

How do I order and send my document?

On our website: choose the document and the language, upload your file (PDF, JPG or PNG), then pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. A scan or a clear photo is enough.

Will I receive the paper original?

You always receive the signed translation as a PDF by email. The stamped paper copy can be posted as an option, for €10 incl. VAT in mainland France (international postage on request). You can also collect it from our office in Montreuil.

Are my documents protected?

Your documents are covered by professional secrecy (Article 226-13 of the French Criminal Code). Our website and our management software are hosted in France, in compliance with the GDPR, and connections are encrypted.
