Name transliteration — issue #1
Greek is written in its own alphabet, so every proper name (civil status, diplomas) must be transliterated into Latin characters — and one Greek name allows several Latin spellings (Γεωργίου → Georgiou / Yeoryiou; Δημήτριος → Dimitrios / Demetrios). For a sworn translation the spelling must match your passport / residence permit, or it is rejected by the prefecture or OFII. We apply the official ISO 843 and ELOT 743 standards (the Greek romanisation used on Hellenic passports) and always align with your official ID.
A branch of its own = no "neighbouring language" to lean on
Greek has no close cousin: its legal and administrative terminology, document structure and set phrases are specific to it. This demands a translator who genuinely commands administrative Greek, not an approximate transfer.
Greek AND Cypriot civil-status templates
A Greek birth certificate (often issued by the Ληξιαρχείο, the civil-registry office) and a Cypriot document are not laid out the same way. We know these national templates and their terminology.
