On-site interpreting by AFTraduction

What is on-site interpreting?

On-site interpreting brings the interpreter and the people who need to talk together in the same room. The interpreter renders each exchange in the other language, sentence by sentence, and sees the gestures, the documents and the reactions.

It is the mode to choose for a long, sensitive or difficult conversation: breaking news of a diagnosis, a hearing, the signing of a deed, a negotiation.

Where we work

Which appointments call for an interpreter on site?

Our interpreters go wherever the appointment takes place, with the vocabulary of the field.

  • Hospitals and health centres

Consultations, breaking news of a diagnosis, consent to treatment, discharge: the patient understands and is understood.

  • Social services, housing and asylum

Intake interviews, social support, support for asylum seekers, accommodation centres.

  • Courts and law firms

Meetings with a lawyer, hearings, interviews: the interpreter renders every exchange, adding nothing and leaving nothing out.

  • Notaries and town halls

Signing a deed, an estate, a wedding: when the procedure requires it, we look for a sworn interpreter in the language you need.

  • Companies

Meetings, negotiations, site visits, training, job interviews: the interpreter supports your foreign counterparts.

  • Schools and public offices

Meetings with a school team, a municipal department or a public office.

Interpreting modes

Consecutive or whispered: which mode for your appointment?

On site, the interpreter adapts to the situation. We advise you when we prepare the quote.

  • Consecutive (dialogue)

The interpreter renders each turn right after the person who spoke, both ways. It is the mode for interviews and appointments with two or three people, also called liaison interpreting.

For Consultations, interviews, notary appointments, negotiations

  • Whispered (chuchotage)

Seated next to one or two people, the interpreter whispers what is being said, at the same time. It suits a meeting where most participants share one language.

For Meetings, boards, hearings with one or two non-French speakers

  • Site visits and small groups

For a site visit or a group on the move, a portable system (transmitter and receivers, no booth) lets the interpreter work for the whole group at once.

For Factory or building-site visits, guided tours

    Interpreting equipment rental
  • Simultaneous in a booth

For a large audience and several languages, the interpreters work in booths: this is conference interpreting.

    For Symposia, congresses, general meetings

How it works

What is on-site interpreting?

A professional interpreter is present at the place of the appointment. They render every exchange in the other language, both ways, usually in consecutive mode: the person speaks, then the interpreter interprets. This mode suits long or sensitive conversations, or ones with documents to show.

Do I need an interpreter on site, by phone or by video?

On site for a long or sensitive conversation, or one with documents to show; by phone for an immediate need or a short exchange; by video if the participants are in different places.

Area and languages

Which towns do you cover?

Paris and the whole Île-de-France region: Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne, Hauts-de-Seine, Val-d’Oise, Yvelines, Essonne and Seine-et-Marne. Our offices are in Montreuil, on the edge of Paris. Give the address of the appointment in your request.

Can you find interpreters for rare languages?

Our network of over 800 linguists covers nearly 200 languages and dialects. For a rare language, finding an interpreter available on site can take longer: let us know early. If nobody is available on the day, we offer you interpreting by phone or by video.

Confidentiality and framework

Can you send a sworn interpreter?

Say so in your request when the procedure requires it (a notarial deed, a wedding, a hearing). We look for a sworn interpreter in the language you need among the over 150 sworn translators and interpreters of our network, and tell you before booking whether one is available.

Is the interpreter bound by confidentiality?

Yes. Our interpreters are bound by a strict code of ethics and by a confidentiality agreement. They remain neutral, do not give their opinion and interpret faithfully, adding nothing and leaving nothing out.

Rates and booking

How far in advance should I book?

As soon as the date is set: the earlier the request, the wider the choice of interpreters, especially for a rare language. For an immediate need, telephone interpreting takes over, with an interpreter in about 5 minutes on average, 24/7.
